Biochemistry
Our biochemistry courses at the University of Reading will equip you with a wide range of practical and transferable skills, such as understanding enzyme kinetics, protein identification, data analysis, experimental design, and problem solving.
Throughout your degree, you will be able to tailor your studies and select modules based on your interests. You will build your knowledge through lectures and laboratory work performed in our state-of-the-art teaching labs, and have the opportunity to undertake an industrial placement with major companies such as GSK and Diamond Light Source.
You will also gain invaluable experience in bioinformatics, and learn to use software to model protein structures and explore the impact of potential mutations.
A research-intensive environment
Our academic teaching staff are experts in their fields. They work in a wide variety of biomedical and environmental areas, such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration, endocrinology, and bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections.
You’ll have the opportunity to undertake a research project during your final year, with a chance to get your work published in an internationally recognised scientific journal. Potential projects include the application of microscopy, gene editing, and models of disease.
You also have the opportunity to undertake summer placements such as the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP). This consists of six paid weeks working on a research project alongside PhD students and postdoctoral researchers within the School of Biological Sciences.
