Subject tasters

Other ways to visit the University

Subject tasters

Attend a subject taster session either virtually or in person on campus and discover what it would be like to study your chosen subject at degree level. We offer them in a wide range of subjects throughout the year. If there is not a session in your subject area please do register your interest and we will let you know when any new ones have been added related to your areas of interest.

On these free-of-charge events, you will sample lectures and practical sessions, work alongside other students interested in your subject, meet our enthusiastic staff, and get a real feel for life at the University of Reading.

The majority of subject tasters on campus are full-day events and run from approximately 09:30 - 15:00, allowing you time to really immerse yourself in the subject and relevant department.  However, we do occasionally offer shorter taster sessions which may run for just a morning or afternoon. These sessions are often linked to a particular aspect of A level study and relate directly to certain skills or areas of the curriculum.

We try to accommodate as many students as possible in our outreach provision and in most cases will be able to offer places to all that are interested. However, in the case of over-subscription on events, priority will be given to students with no parental experience in HE, under represented groups and those from low income backgrounds.

Travel bursaries

The University of Reading is committed to ensuring that its outreach programmes are accessible for all. We offer a Travel Bursary that prospective students may apply for on campus taster events, and if successful would cover the entire cost of their travel. Certain eligibility criteria applies*.  There is an option to apply for this on the each event booking form.

*Eligibility criteria for the travel bursary

Students must fulfil at least one of the following criteria:

  1. The individual has no parental experience of university.
  2. The individual lives in an identified postcode area which has low progression into HE (POLAR quintiles 1 or 2).
  3. The individual lives in a postcode area which is identified as being an area of social deprivation (IMD Quintile 1 or 2).
  4. The individual comes from a group that is under-represented in HE The individual has a disability.
  5. The individual is care-experienced or estranged (read our Care experienced & estranged students support page for definitions).

Is the education system fit for purpose? Education studies at University of Reading

Tuesday 18 April, 16.00 – 17.00

Is the education system fit for purpose and is it fair? What should we be teaching children and young people to prepare them for the future? What’s more important – STEM or Arts and Humanities? What role should schools play in improving society? Should we even have schools the way we know them? How can we do education differently?

If any of these questions interest you, join Dr David Dobraszczyk from the Institute of Education for a critical and engaging discussion about creating a new vision for Education.
